Itinerary per day

Our tour will begin the moment you arrive at Pereira Airport, where we will be waiting to welcome you and start this exciting adventure. From there, we will transfer in a comfortable, spacious van to Hotel Abadía Plaza GHL Collection, where you will enjoy dinner and a well-deserved rest.

Our adventure will begin early in the morning in the mountains of the Western Andes, near Mistrató. On this day, we will wake up early and travel to Mistrató, a small town located about two hours from Pereira. There, we will visit a beautiful reserve where we will enjoy bird feeders attracting hummingbirds, tanagers, and many other colorful species.

Targets: Velvet-purple Coronet, Purple-bibbed Whitetip, Brown Inca, Black-and-Gold Tanager (Endemic), Saffron-crowned Tanager,  Chestnut-crowned Gnataeter, Club-winged Manakin, Ornate Hawk-eagle, Multicolored Tanager (Endemic),, Glistening-green Tanager, Purplish-mantled Tanager. 

Once we finish Mistrató at 14:00 PM we will move to Tatamá Natural Park in the Montezuma Reserve. The driving there is between 3:00, or 3:30 hours.

After arriving from Mistrató to the town of Pueblo Rico, we will transfer to 4×4 vehicles for a 45-minute journey to Montezuma Lodge. Here, we will spend the next three nights and two and a half days exploring the upper, middle, and lower elevations of one of Colombia’s premier birdwatching hotspots; On day 05 we will take the road to Manizales.

Target: Gold-ringed Tanager (Endemic), Chamí Antpitta (Endemic), Black Solitaire, Beautiful Jay, Tucan Barbet, Chestnut-bellied Flowerpiercer (Endemic), Dusky Starfronlet (Endemic), Crested Ant-Tanager (Endemic), Rufous-gaped Hillstar, Chestnut-breasted Chlorophonia. 

On day five, after our journey, we will arrive at Río Blanco Reserve, located very close to Manizales. Next day, we will begin exploring the incredible birdlife of this area. We will visit at the luxurious Owl’s Watch, where stunning views of the reserve await, along with opportunities to observe toucans, tanagers, and antpittas; we will stay this night ar Rio Blanco Lodge.

Target: Black-billed Mountain-Tucan, Grass-green Tanager, Chestnut-crowned Anpitta, Brown-banded Antpitta (Endemic), Long-tayled Sylph, Black-and-Chestnut Eagle, Collared Inca, Golden-headed Quetzal, Masked Saltator, Masked Trogon, White-throated Daggerbill, Crimson-mantled Woodpecker, Rusty-faced Parrot, Southern-emerald Toucanet. 

After a magical adventure in Río Blanco, we will head to one of the most famous birdwatching sites in the world: Hacienda El Bosque. This is a remarkable location where birds are highly accustomed to feeders, offering excellent and close viewing opportunities. Here, we expect to find several of our main target species of the trip. We will spend the next two nights in this exceptional setting.

Targets: Grey-Breasted Mountain-Tucan, Crescent-faced Antpitta, Equatorial Antpitta, Sword-billed Hummingbird, Grass Wren, Yellow-bellied Chat-Tyrant, Hooded Mountain Tanager, Barred Fruiteater, Buff-winged Starfronlet

The following day, we will head to Los Nevados National Natural Park, which will be the highest elevation point of our entire journey at 4,200 meters above sea level. There, we may encounter some of the rarest bird species of the trip, as we will be in a unique páramo ecosystem where only a few species have been able to adapt and thrive; also we will visit Termales del Ruiz in the afternoon.

Targets: Buffy Helmetcrest, Andean Condor, Rainbow-bearded Thornbill, Black-chested Buzzard-Eagle, Rufous-fronted Parakeet, Noble Snipe, Andean Duck, Lacrymose Mountain Tanager, Scarlet-bellied Mountain Tanager, Golden-crowned Tanager, Viridian Metaltail, Black-thighted Puffleg, Great sapphirewing. 

After returning from Los Nevados National Natural Park, a much warmer and more pleasant climate awaits us at Tinamú Birding. There, we will spend our final night in the Central Andes, and the following day we will enjoy the abundance of bird species found in this area before heading to Matecaña International Airport to continue our adventure.

Targets: Golden-collared Manakin, Blue-necked Tanager, Bay-headed Tanager, Blue-lored Antbird, Jet Antbird, Bar-crested Antshrike, Great Antshrike, Moustached Puffbird.

After a 40-minute flight and an overnight stay at GHL Hotel Capital, we will head to Sumapaz National Natural Park, where we will encounter completely different species and a unique páramo ecosystem compared to the one we explored in the Central Andes, with new plants and birdlife.

Targets: Green-bearded Helmetcrest, Cliff Flycatcher, Bogotá Rail, Apolinar’s Wren, Bronze-tailed Thornbill, Purple-backed Thornbill.

After a full day in the Sumapaz National Natural Park páramo, in the afternoon we will head towards the Páramo de Guasca, where the last high-Andean species of our journey will be waiting for us. There, we will visit the Observatorio de Aves de los Andes, where incredible birdlife awaits.

Targets: Glowing Puffleg, Andean Potoo, Brown-breasted Parakeet, Blue-throated Starfrontlet, Coopery-bellied Puffleg, Musica Antpitta, Pale-bellied Tapaculo, Silvery-throated Spinetail, Black-backed Grossbeak, Band-tailed seedeater,  Green-tailed Trainbearer. 

Over the following days, we will visit Hacienda La Leona, an incredible location in the foothills of the Llanos, directly connected to the páramos of the Eastern Andes. Here, we will encounter entirely new bird species, and we will spend the next three days searching for them, making the best observations, and capturing outstanding photographs.

Targets: Speckled-nightingale Thrush, Chestnut-eared Aracari, Pale-mandibled Aracari, Violaceus Jay, Golden-tailed Sapphire, Blue-fronted Lancebill, Burnished-buff Tanager, Gilded Barbet, Wire-tailed Manakin, Yellow-tufted Woodpecker, Magpie Tanager, Blue-rumped Manakin, Chestnut-bellied Thrush.

During these four days of our journey, we will focus on searching for some of the most incredible bird species in a unique sub-Amazonian forest, where we will find birds that are literally restricted to this region of the country. Here, we will enjoy the final days of our adventure, by which point we are likely to have recorded over 300 to 400 species. We will be right in the transition zone between the Eastern Andes and the Colombian Amazon, an area of exceptional biodiversity.

Targets: Hooded Antpitta, Western Fire-eye, Golden-eared Tanager, White-bellied Antpitta, Flame-faced Tanager, Crested Quetzal, Schwartz’s Antthrush, Red-bellied Grackle, East Andean Antbird.
